The University of California, Irvine was founded in 1965 and is considered a major research university. UCI’s has the unyielding commitment for strict academics, leadership, research and character development which makes the campus the leader in innovation and discovery that serves national, local and global communities in a variety of different ways.

UCI has close to 28,000 students 9,000 staff and 1,100 faculty members and is the most dynamic campus in the entire UC system. UCI is the first choice for students and it ranks among the country’s leading universities for undergraduate applications and only admits freshmen that have high academic profiles. UCI is also Orange County’s second largest employer generating $4 billion annually.

UCI is ranked among the country’s best universities both private and public and excels in a wide variety of different fields giving it national recognition. Three of the world’s leading researchers that have won Nobel Prizes graduated from UCI, one in physics and two in chemistry.

Research and Graduate Programs

UCI is the leader in research and graduate programs with commitment to undergraduate education. Recently there have been several programs added including pharmaceutical sciences, public health and nursing science. There has also been a new school of law added which has its first class graduating in 2012.

Faculty, staff and students all go beyond classroom and laboratory boundaries to address a myriad social issue. The UC Irvine Medical Center is the county’s only university hospital and has recently opened the UC Irvine Douglas Hospital. The hospital uses all the state of the art technologies giving them the ability of give specialized surgical and medical treatment to all of the region’s citizens.

Community Life

UCI stimulates the community with public activities and events and features world renowned speakers such as Entrepreneur and Virgin Unite found Sir Richard Branson, Academy Award winner Charlize Theron and His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama.

UCI has recently been experiencing growing pains during 2010-2011 when they invested $110 for capital construction projects for upgrades that are currently in the planning stages. Additional monies are also coming from sources including federal and state agencies, private foundations and industry contracts.

UCI has proven to be an intricate part of their community and also the world in many different ways through scientific, creative, scholarly and economic contributions. They have strengthened their community through their contributions and will continue to do so well into the future. Currently they are planning their 50th anniversary celebration in 2015 which will be a celebration of education, accomplishments, and recognitions. The UCI 50th anniversary celebration will give the community a glimpse into the future at the plans the university has in store for future freshmen as well as for the community.
